FEATURES MUSIC BY THE NEW “BIG O” BAND COMPOSED OF OAKLAND UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT MUSIC TEACHERS
WHO: One of the premiere wine and food tasting events of the Bay Area, Oakland Rotary’s Taste of California, celebrates its 25th Anniversary with spectacular gourmet food from top area restaurants and caterers, complimented by exquisite wine and great beers, from 1 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 23, 2007 at the Oakland Museum of California’s Garden Courtyard, 1000 Oak Street, in Oakland.
WHAT: Big O – The new 17-member band composed of Oakland Unified School District Music Teachers will perform big band sounds inspired by Duke Ellington, Woody Herman and Count Basie. Founded in November of 2006, under the direction of Randy Porter, the music teacher at Westlake Middle School, the band showcases the extraordinarily talented musicians who lead the music programs in Oakland‘s public schools. This very unique teacher’s band will entertain during the afternoon along with young musicians from the string section of the Oakland Youth Orchestra.

WHEN: 1 – 4 p.m.
WHY: Presented in collaboration with The Oakland Museum of California, the Oakland Youth Orchestra, East Bay Agency for Children and the Piedmont-Montclair Rotary Club, this premiere gourmet event benefits Oakland Rotary Club’s local education programs and the special programs of the event’s collaborators. With over 350 members, the Oakland Rotary Club is one of the largest and most active non-profit service organizations in the Bay Area.
