11/9 Novoscene Weekend

Posted by novoscene on November 9, 2007

Just another great weekend in the Bay Ares. Start Friday off with a little graffiti and youth art then mix it up with a little high impact monster puppet rock and cap it off with a birthday party for one of the most swellest chicks in the Bay. -kwan

Friday, Nov. 9

The Zoopy Show

The Zoopy Show really has to be seen to be believed. They’re like a cross between Gwar, the Muppets and the Rocky Horror Picture show with giant monsters playing instruments and hella cute punk rock cheerleaders leading the pack. The music’s a little all over the place, with a mix of rock, trance and various dance jams making their way into the mix.

But honestly, with all that’s going on onstage (did I mention the druggy puppet show?) does the music really matter that much?

Grown Ass Woman: Aya De Leon’s 40th Birthday Party

Everybody loves Aya De Leon because she’s just adorably nice. Everybody knows Aya, because she’s done everything. The spoken word poet slash MC slash actor slash feminist slash academic slash community ambassador slash self love advocate slash UC Berkeley proff slash whatever the hell else she feels like has been putting her thing down around town for years. Her one woman show “Thieves in the Temple” made the claim for taking hip hop back to the good old days of block parties and self respect while her yearly Valentine’s Day “Love Fests” have encouraged people to get all mushy and love themselves, with or without a mate. From the stage to the classroom, her love for people and her community is evident and today, as she hit’s the big 4-0 and prepares to take the plunge into grad school, the community gets a chance to love her back.
Come out for an evening of performances, toasts, dancing and yes, dominoes. Because a grown ass woman’s gotta know how to throw those bones.
