The Crucible Presents A Gifty Holiday Celebration and Art Sale
Looking for the last minute out of the ordinary gift ideas? Something that’ll stand out from all the techie bling and fruitcakes? Well it might be a good idea to roll over to the Crucible for their annual “Gifty Holiday Art Sale”, one of the more unusual holiday shopping extravaganzas in the area.
Expect Santa to roll in in typical style accompanied by giant elves and “flamedeer,” to preside over the tables of blown glass, jewelry, sculpture, clothing, and ceramics from over 50 Bay Area artisans including Carla Hall, Kristy Alfieri and April Zilber.
Crucible staffers will be on hand demonstrating the various classes offered at the West Oakland fire arts center. Participants from the Crucible’s Bike Frame
Alteration program will be showing off their creations as will artist-in-residence Githinji Wa Mibre.

Robots Are Art
Screw all the Philip K. Dick robot paranoia, robots rock! To prove it, Float Gallery is presenting a gallery full of robotic art work including mixed media, painting and kinetic arts. At today’s reception expect to see robots serving beer, working on paintings and even grumbling about just what it means to be a “disgruntled homeless robot.” Frank Garvey presents a history of robotics and Trevor Blackwell, founder and CEO of ANYBOTS and Monty, the first humanoid robot, will be judging the DIY art show.
I, Robot. Art, Robot.

Open Studio: Courageous C “Strutt Yo Stuff”
Detroit born visual artist Courageous has been creating art for as long as he can remember. Over the years the East Oakland artist has been heavily influence by Renaissance, Dutch, and Pre Raphaelite paintings and along with academic training as an architect, they flavor his work as it stretches from canvas to mural and woodworking to clothes design. Today he’s opening his studio to the public for a special intimate showing before the holidays.

Chick Corea Electrik Band
“Considering the staggering volume of his recorded output over the past 40 years, it is no overstatement to call Chick Corea one of the most prolific composers of the second half of the 20th century. From avant-garde to bebop, from children’s songs to straight ahead, from hard-hitting fusion to heady forays into classical, Chick has touched an astonishing number of musical bases in his illustrious career while maintaining a standard of excellence that is simply uncanny. The Elektrik band is one of the most critically acclaimed jazz fusion bands of the past two decades. Much different than the now defunct Return to Forever band, the Elektric Band is a move away from rock -oriented fusion into a more Post-bop style.”
Simply put, Corea is a music legend. Over the years the Grammy Award winning pianist, composer and bandleader has played with everyone from Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock to Paco de Lucia and Sarah Vaughan. Check out the final night at Yoshi’s and see the man Downbeat magazine calls “jazz’s most protean and unpredictable character.”
