The Longest Walk 2
The takeover of Native American takeover of Alcatraz was one of the most successful protest actions of the 20th century, fueling the rise of modern activism. From the takeover of Alcatraz Island in 1969 to the Longest Walk in 1978, the Alcatraz-Red Power Movement (ARPM) used social protest to demand that the government honor treaty obligations by providing resources, education, housing and healthcare to alleviate poverty.
Beginning Feb. 11th, participants in the Longest Walk 2 will embark on a 5 month journey from San Francisco to Washington, D.C. picking up litter along the highway as they go and educating viewers. For the net 3 days the Bay will be full of celebrations, potlucks and fundraisers for the big event.

Ricky Allman and Zachary Royer Scholz Art Exhibit
“Raised Mormon, Ricky Allman was taught to prepare for the Apocalypse – a complete and final destruction of the world. Sure he wouldn’t live to see adulthood, he aligned with dystopian visions of his future. In his 20s, he moved from Utah’s protective mountain landscape to the city of Boston, where he saw the skyscrapers vulnerable to destruction, ready to crash down with the slightest provocation. The city became an apocalyptic metaphor for his life. He began to study the way architecture interacts and overlaps with nature, and how it dominates or is dominated by its surroundings. Ricky explores architectural spaces in his work to play out his fascinations and fears, utopia and dystopia, and issues of faith and doubt.
Zachary Royer Scholz is a sculptor and conceptual artist who works collaboratively with his materials, manipulating objects to shift their boundaries of significance. Like paired artist Ricky Allman, Zachary also uses architectural spaces to alter and create new meaning. As objects tend to renew themselves in different contexts, Zachary leverages unexpected possibilities for unforeseeable ends.”

People’s Grub Party
Maybe you really like food, and maybe you often wish that more people cared about health and nutrition in this fast-food nation. If so, the People’s Grub Party is your wish come true.
You’ll get to taste the food that artist Keba Konte, part owner of the Guerilla Café in Berkeley, prepares in a cooking demonstration. Your kids can join in an interactive workshop, where everyone learns about healthy food through games. And you’ll get to take home lots of free healthy produce — apples, carrots, turnips, and greens.
If you’re wondering what this is all about, it’s an exercise in educating people about nutrition and health backed by the West Oakland-based nutrition advocacy group, The People’s Grocery.
