More than ever, the Hip Hop generation is gunning to have it’s voice heard in the political arena and with the onslaught of Hip Hop inspired endorsement ads, candidates brushing their shoulders off at the podium and speaking high level hip hop conventions, it looks like the suits are starting to listen to the streets.
But that doesn’t mean things are all good between hip hop and the white house. Young people’s voices still aren’t heard en masse and most teens still don’t see the need to contribute to the political process. So tonight the Town Business Network is gathering together bunch of hip hop personalities, some tunes and a few frames of bowling to try and change their minds.
The organizers of the 1st Annual Vote Bowl ’08 are hoping to register 125,000 young voters by the October 21 registration deadline. Tonight they’ll be over at AMF Southshore Lanes in Alameda along with some of local hip hop’s elite including Too Short, Goapele, San Quinn, Jimmie Reign, Dwayne Wiggins, Mistah F.A.B., Beeda Weeda, Hieroglyphics, E-40, Zion I and players from the Oakland Raiders and Golden State Warriors. Vote Bowl moderator and host Chuck Johnson says the purpose of the event is “to raise voter awareness and increase participation in the political process among Oakland’s Hip Hop community.” Ten pins, registration forms and hip hop, -democracy in action.-Kwan
