9/9 Sin Fran Psycho Martin Luther

Posted by novoscene on September 9, 2008

I admit I didn’t know much about the bay music scene until a couple of years before moving to Cali.  Hell, I didn’t know much about Cali music period. Growing up there was Dr. Dre, Snoop, Tupac, Hieroglyphics, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and an inexplicable buzz around Too $hort that always confused the hell out of me.

But I remember hearing soul/rock singer/guitarist Martin Luther about 6-7 years ago. He was (is?) part of a group of crazycool backup musicians touring with The Roots (along with Cody Chestnutt, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu etc.) and I found a solo track on some kind of compilation. There was this one line “Sin fran pyscho, Killafornia-that’s my home!” that stuck with me for years and cemented this freaky, somewhat edgy idea of SF in my head better than all the hippies and protests ever could.

Since moving the “Sin Fran” area I’ve checked out Martin Luther quite a few times and his funky guitar playing is always impressive. He’s playing tonight over at Pacific Standard Time at 333 Ritch. The vid above is of him at Montreux a few years ago performing the “Home” song, Still have no idea what it’s called. but it still gets me every time I hear it.-kwan
