9/17 Your own personal California

Posted by novoscene on September 16, 2008

Was it your first earthquake? Your first Halloween in the Castro? Your first trip down the 1 or wrapping your arms around a huge California Redwood for the first time? How do you define your relationship with California-it’s landmarks and movements? It’s culture and history?

This was the question Jo Ford and Maria Porges asked a group of artists to ponder for the Oakland Art Gallery’s new exhibit “We Are California History.” According to the curators, the exhibit asks nearly 30 artists, both recently arrived and “native”, to explore the relationship between their own recollections and experiences and public conceptions of the state’s history.

While the exhibit is on the walls through September 27, the featured event will be the closing Art Walk where viewers travel to various locals and trade art along the way. The exhibition is free but tickets to the fund raising walk range from $40-$100. Participating Artists include:

Timothy Buckwalter, Jessica Cadkin, Paola Coda, Alika Cooper, Kamil Dawson, Narangkar Glover, Daniel Healey, Robbin Henderson, Hannah Henry, Amy Hibbs, Jeanty, Therese Lahaie, Scott MacLeod, Jill McLennan, E. Minnow, Colleen Mulvey, Claire Nereim, Russ Osterweil, Nathanial Parsons, Susannah Prinz, Jasmine Shahbandi, Julia Shirar, Andrew Ütt, Susan Vander Mellen, Patricia Wakida, Jeanty, Janet Silk Gabrielle Thormann.
