10/21: Got cultural art’s funding?

Posted by novoscene on October 20, 2008

Well if you live in The Town, you might not have it for long.  With Oakland facing a $42 million deficit, City Hall is slashing budgets for programs and next on the chopping block: funding for the Oakland Cultural Affairs Commission, the office that regularly provides grants and art opportunities to the local creative community.  This program has allowed for some really fine programming and creative works over the years and to see it nixed would be a huge loss for the city. Art & Soul festival,

If you’re and artist, have friends who are artists or just love the idea of publicly funded creative projects, tell everyone you know to come out to tomorrow’s city council meeting where the matter will be voted on.  If the local artistic community doesn’t raise it’s voice, it could be bye bye arts funding, and Jeebus knows we already struggle with the dough as it is.

So far the petition opposing the measure has over 900 signatures but the more there are, the better the chances of making sure the cuts don’t happen.  Sign the petition to save the commission here and attend the meeting tomorrow night.-kwan
