Taj Mahal Trio

For more than 40 years, Taj Mahal has delighted fans with an eclectic blending of cross-cultural musical styles. He is a master of finger-picking country blues, bluegrass banjo, slide guitar, southern blues, soul, R&B, reggae, music of Hawaii, the Caribbean and beyond, and more. His influences and abilities are seemingly endless and his energy to share and perform is equally as deep. He plays Yoshi’s Oakland through Sunday night.

The Oakland Ballet’s Nutcracker

It’s that time of the year again. Ronn Guidi is back with his ever-popular Nutcracker. Head over to the Paramount this weekend to show your local ballet company some love and support. What’s cool about this is that unlike a lot of other ballet companies, this one keeps its standards high and ticket prices down.

Om Winter Ball

As a special holiday treat after spending all your had earned dough on loved ones, Om and Mighty are presented this free show of kick ass local music in the hopes that you’ll donate a litle bread t a good cause- NextAid World AIDS Day. The night features a special live performance by The Park (Nino Moshella, Alice Russell, Happy Mayfield) along with the sublime holiday sounds of M3, J-Boogie, Lance De Sardi, Solar, Galen, Alland Byallo, Dj Fluid, Rob G, Ryan Paulson. And don’t miss the frosty North Pole Lounge with Santa and his elves on site for the festive photos opps.

The Throwdown

Since their inception, performance troupe headRush has been campaigning for the People for President a grass roots campaign to get more regular folks involved in the voting process. Now with the election of Barack Obama, the founders feel that we’re all just a little closer to that goal and tonight they present for the last time their touring show The Throwdown. Come be a part of the crowd participation and stick around for the discussion afterwards.

Anna’s Holiday Caroling

Break out your songbooks people, it’s holiday carol time. Now in it’s 3rd year, the event is led by veteran choir director Terrance Kelly, who’s directed choirs at the Imani Community Church, Church by the Side of the Road, Greater St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church and others. He’s arranged music for albums by Linda Ronstadt and the Kronos Quartet, and gospel arrangements of popular music for TV and video soundtracks. Mr. Kelly has also been the director o the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir since 1986. He” be joined by pianist/Composer Ellen Hoffman.

CODEPINK Holiday Potluck

Join CODEPINK at Global Exchangefor a holiday potluck this Saturday and for dessert, get a report back on CODEPINK’s recent trip to Iran. Rae Abileah who recently returned from an interfaith peace delegation to Iran will share a slideshow of photos and facilitate a discussion on US-Iran relations. Sistas-Wit -Style salutes “Back In De Dey” with performances of traditional caribbean dances by Sistas- Wit-Style Caribbean Folk Performing Co.,and the group’s original drummers. There’ll also be special guest artists including the Tacuma Sdouae drummers, East Oakland School of the Arts and Santa Fe Elementary, “ASHA” Mills Mount Academy School.
