• O-Scene: If it’s not here, don’t go there…

This is the Oakland blog for people living out loud. True to the Oakbook philosophy, we’ll tell you where to go, what to do, and what’s really going down in the town and around the Bay. From parties to films, peace protests to flag football, if there's a there there, we'll blog it.
  • Invite us to things. We’re great at parties.

If you've got events, photos, videos, announcements or general news on all the happenings in the Bay, send 'em over to us at oscene@theoakbook.com And don't be afraid to leave a comment. Don't be shy...come over and talk to us. You just might get lucky!

1/17 Oakland loves the kids

Posted by novoscene on January 17, 2009

Ask just about anyone under 21 what there is to do in Oakland and you’ll likely be met with one of those blank doe eyed stares, a shrug of shoulders or a demonstration of most young people’s seemingly favorite pastime (at least around my area) hanging out, not really doing much. Just hangin’.

Not that there aren’t loads of youth organizations and community groups-we’ve got oodles-but with limited funds, small staffs, and the usual laundry list of critical youth issues they’re addressing, producing after school and weekend events usually ends up more as a good idea than an actual occurance.

That’s why the Cultivating Town Solidarity cultural arts festival going down today at Merritt College is unique. Some of the area’s more well known youth groups, including Oakland Leaf Foundation, BUMP Records, Weekend Warriors, COV House Records and Youth Movement Records, have come together to celebrate The Town’s youth culture and build connections between the myriad artists, organizers and creatives around town.

The event’s free, all‐ages are invited and there’s a packed schedule of events including music, games, healthy living information booths, participating organization tables, and guest performances from local artists. No Worries Vegan Catering will be providing free food.
