2/26 Soul Rock and Secret Societies
Posted by novoscene on February 26, 2009

For the last couple of weeks Thursday nights over at Karibbean City have been heating up with some of the most promising up and comers and below the radar veteran soul musicians in the area throwing it down for “Soul Searching Thursdays.” Performers so far have included Czelena, DJ B-love, Agape Soul, Malcolm Marshall and DJ Manny Black. Tonight soul music OG Kofy Browntakes the stage to show these new whipper snappers how it’s done.
While getting her start in the Bay’s mid ’90’s spoken word scene and dipping both feet into the singer/songwriter waters more than once, for the last few Kofy’s been swimming more in the river of hard rock, both as the lead singer of the Black Girls Rock poster girls “Sistahs in the Pit” and with cuts off the new album, “Soul Rock.” Just back from touring Vienna and Switzerland, I’m sure Kofy and crew are in the mood for a little hometown love and support.Or you could pop over to The Uptown tonight for a totally different kind of support-the rope bondage kind. Shibari (Japanese-style rope bondage) rigger Mike West’s erotic Rope Bondage Ritual will be just one of the dark arts to see the light (?) of day during the first official convening of the Shadow Society . Taking more than a few pages from H.P.Lovecraft’s twisted fiction, Oakland’s newest dance night is like a walk through your favorite cemetery, only with a soundtrack provided by SF Darkwave band Vernian Process and ghoulish go go dancing courtesy of the Black Widows.
But just because it’s called Shadow Society don’t think it’s all vampires, heavy eyeliner and Darkwave (but there will be plenty-I mean, it is called Shadow Society). The promoters promise a musical exploration of all things dark, not just the usual suspects. Expect DJ’s Fact. 50 and Tomas Diablo to dig deep into the crates for the darkest Ska, Neo Classical, Garage, Trip Hop and Swing there is. Dark swing? Hmm.
